Asiya (1960)

A scene from Asiya (1960)
Clearly influenced by Satyajit Ray’s “Panther Panchali”, the director Fateh Lohani tried vainly to capture the lyrical beauty of Bengal’s countryside in sequences lingering unnecessarily. Fateh Lohani did not seem to have a clear idea about the exact moment when one episode should take over from another, making each either too long or too short. This was a common defect in most Pakistani films that were comparatively serious attempts at film-making. The directors appeared to face difficulty in their effort to correctly establish the times and situations. This easily bored the local audiences who were used to seeing foreign productions where speed of filming corresponds, more or less, with the speed of the development of the story in audience’s mind. A visual medium always encourages spontaneous and instant responses in the audience. A slow development of episode for no greater reason than the director or editor’s lack of proficiency in film making can prove crucial for a film’s success. These films, in general, tried to appeal all the classes of audience but proved either half-baked intellectually for the intelligentsia or too muddled for the masses – Alamgir Kabir
