Remarks
It is fourth directorial venture of Govind Nihlani who is also credited in it as a photographer.. Damyanti, a rich middle aged widow, throws a party in honor of Diwakar Barve, the celebrated poet and playwright. She believes him to be a patron of Arts but before the evening is over, her illusions are painfully shattered. Sona, her young and intensely idealistic daughter, is an unwilling guest in the party, disgusted by the hypocrisy of her mother's beliefs and life-style. She has had a baby, the result of a brief affair but is bitterly opposed to her mother's desire to arrange a respectable marriage for her. Barve arrives at the party sleek with success and self assurance but he is a cynic. When Damayanti comes to him full of reverence for his talent, he cruelly disillusions her by revealing the true source of his inspiration. Mohini, Barve's mistress, is an aging actress, unable to cope with his total loss of interest in her. She arrives at the party already drunk, an embarrassment for Barve. Amrit, the most conspicuous by his absence, is a poet, the revolutionary who does not compromise his beliefs. He is the invisible thread binding the tapestry of the film together. Woven in and around these central strands are the lives of the other guests. Some more characters like Bharat, Vrinda, Ravindra, Mrs.Abraham, Agashe, Malvika, Avinash Puri and Doctor are also woven beautifully in The Party.. Cinematographer: Govind Nihalani. film without songs
