Remarks

Based on the short story "Telnapota Avishkar" by Premendra Mitra, "Ruins" is the story of three friends who, tired of the hustle and bustle of city life, seek a quiet retreat and travel to a ruined mansion that once housed a family of two. This mother and daughter inherit a portion of this ancestral ruin. The mother, ailing, blind, and paralyzed, awaits her distant nephew, hoping he will marry her daughter as promised. But she doesn't know that the man is not only married but also the father of a child who lives in the city. The girl knows this truth but refuses to reveal it to her mother, fearing the shock of knowing the truth. One of the three urban traveler friends is a professional photographer, the second is the girl's cousin, and the third has joined them for the trip. Just two and a half days later, they face a strange situation. Then, together, they stage a terrifying drama to make the girl's blind mother realize that it was the photographer who had promised to marry her. Later, the three friends return. The girl begins to experience a terrible loneliness, with only her blind mother present with her. Memory and fantasy combine to create a unique world. A world filled with sorrow, gentleness, and a mystery lurking somewhere far away! This world, thus created, transports the film's characters to a place where they sense the vibrations of loyalty and honesty behind apparent betrayal: Memory, fantasy, and instant happenings build a story amidst 'The Ruins'. The story of an encounter. Sad, mellow, distantly startling. Screenplay: Mrinal Sen. A film without songs.
