Originally cleared by the censors in 1961 under the title "Tanhai," the film was never released due to a dispute between the producer and the financier. In 1974, the film was re-cleared by the censors under the name "Badi Maa," after some of the songs from "Tanhai" were removed. A film with the same title had also been cleared by the censors in 1945.
